Introduction

Born in 2007, young Chinese defensive prodigy Li Tianyang is taking the international stage by storm. While modern defense is dominated by long pips, Li embraces one of China’s most aggressive traditions: the short-pips (SP) classical defense.

Playing Style & Tactics

Li Tianyang operates as a highly aggressive, modern chopper. Instead of passive containment, his game relies on extreme spin variation and sudden counter-attacks:

  • The SP Backhand Chop: Unlike long pips, short pips require active wrist work. Li can alternate between lethal, heavy underspin and completely "empty", dead balls with nearly identical mechanics, forcing immediate mistakes from attackers.
  • The Counter-Attack: The moment an opponent hesitates, Li steps around to finish the rally with high-power forehand loops or flat smashes.

Equipment Profile

  • Blade: Oversized defensive or allround wood with high control for chopping and enough kick for counter-loops.
  • Forehand: Hard, sticky Chinese inverted rubber (e.g., DHS Hurricane 3) for maximum spin.
  • Backhand: Spin-capable, highly controllable short pips (following the classic lineage of DHS 651 or Spectol variations).

Historical Lineage

Li Tianyang follows the legendary footsteps of Ding Song (1995 World Champion) and Hou Yingchao. In the era of the plastic ball—where long pips have lost some deception—Li proves that the active spin control of short pips is the perfect weapon to tame modern high-power table tennis.
